Which Toothpaste Should I Use?

Lori Logan DDS - Group of 3 kids brushing teeth

Selecting a good toothpaste for you is just as important as having a great toothbrush. By using these two products together and brushing at least twice a day for 2-3 minutes, you increase your chances of protecting your oral health from complications. Likewise patients can encounter oral issues if they have a subpar toothbrush or an ineffective toothpaste.

So how can you determine which toothpaste is right for you? This article will explore some factors that you should consider in selecting your toothpaste.

How Can I Determine a Good Toothpaste?

While patients have access to a wide range of products to assist their oral hygiene, oftentimes patients complain that they often don’t know where to begin for narrowing down which toothpaste to select. Here are some factors to consider when selecting the right toothpaste for you:

If you tend to have sensitive gums, you need a toothpaste containing antiseptics. Antiseptics help improve gum protection by fighting inflammation. In addition, they help reduce plaque formation for smoother teeth.

Cavities, also known as “caries” is a bit of an obsession for all of us. They hurt us and destroy our teeth. Fluoride is our first ally! It helps us fight cavities by stopping bacteria and the harm they do to our small teeth. It also helps remineralize our enamel.

At the time of pregnancy, women should start to gargle their mouth with salt water. Sea salt may minimize inflammation and redness as well as assist in healing their gums. Try this at least twice a day. Tips to make this dilute:

  • Take one teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water
  • Swish the mixture in the mouth
  • And spit the solution out

One of the best ideas to prevent pregnancy gingivitis is to visit your dentist at least twice throughout the pregnancy.

If you tend to drink too much coffee, too much tea, wine, too much smoking and you noticed that your teeth are more yellow than those of the Hollywood stars that you jealous? Well, some kinds of toothpaste will help prevent this. They are designed to help you find teeth whiter and less stained.

How Much Toothpaste Should I Use to be Effective?

Some people think that the more toothpaste they put on their toothbrushes, the sooner they will see the results they are hoping for. But unfortunately, it does not happen like that. A small amount of toothpaste, the size of pistachio will do the job. However, it is agreed, the amount of toothpaste used also depends on the age of the person who will use it.  A child will need a dose even smaller than the one presented previously. Children under 6 years of age should be monitored carefully when brushing their teeth to make sure they rub well and do not swallow toothpaste.
