What are Crowns?
Crowns are a type of dental restoration that is meant to improve the structure, strength, and stability of your smile. When a tooth has broken, cracked, or fractured, or if it has recently received a root canal, a crown can improve the tooth’s integrity. Crowns help to restore your bite, making eating and chewing more comfortable. There are many types of crowns available, such as ceramic, porcelain, and same-day.
Why do you need a Crown?
An examination and x-ray is needed to determine if you would benefit from having a crown placed. Most people who want a crown placed over a specific tooth will benefit from having the procedure done. Some of the reasons you may need a crown include:
- You have broken, cracked, or fractured teeth
- A tooth has recently received a root canal
- A tooth has a very large filling that is compromising the integrity of the dentition
- You have recently had a dental implant placed
What makes you a good candidate for Crowns?
Most healthy adult patients are good candidates for crowns. In some cases, even teenagers can benefit from crowns. Because crowns can be made with either porcelain or ceramic, the restoration looks and feels completely natural. Same-day crowns can be completed in one appointment, eliminating the the need for multiple visits and appointments.
What happens during the procedure for Crowns?
You will come into the office and receive anesthesia to make the procedure more comfortable. The tooth will be filed down to make room for the crown. Impressions are made and sent off to a lab where the crown is made for you. Your next appointment involves placing the permanent crown. For same-day crowns, the entire procedure is done in one appointment, as the restoration is made in our office. Crowns can last for years with proper care and maintenance.
