Is Invisalign a treatment alternative for malocclusions?

Invisalign Cypress TXInvisalign is a convenient and comfortable option for correcting a patient’s smile, and in certain cases, the system can be appropriate to address malocclusions (misaligned jaws), as well as crooked or otherwise incorrectly positioned teeth.

While the earliest iterations of Invisalign were limited to rather straightforward cases, the system has been improved since the years it was introduced. Now, even patients with rather complex cases can benefit from this treatment option. Your first step to see if it will work for you is to be evaluated by your dentist.

If you are eligible for treatment with Invisalign, your dentist will examine your teeth and jaws to collect information needed for the treatment plan. This may involve taking x-rays or dental impressions, and that data will be used to design the clear plastic trays that will reposition your teeth and jaws in the same way that conventional orthodontic appliances do.

Patients who choose Invisalign appreciate the convenience in comparison to traditional orthodontic treatment. The trays can be removed at mealtime, so there’s no need to restrict your diet (other than limiting sugar, which is just a good general practice for your oral health). You can also take out the trays when it’s time to brush and floss, so you won’t have to navigate around brackets and wires with your dental floss or tooth brush.

In return for that convenience, patients must be conscientious about wearing the trays as directed in order for the treatment plan to work. You will need to wear the trays about 22 hours each day and switch to a new tray according to the schedule given to you.

In more complex situations, jaw surgery may be needed to eliminate a malocclusion to achieve the patient’s smile goals. You may still be able to use Invisalign to straighten the teeth, however, and your dentist will collaborate with an oral surgeon on your overall treatment plan.

If you need to address a malocclusion, Invisalign may be a treatment option for you. Make arrangements to visit the office of Dr. Lori Logan for a consultation.
