Dental crowns are needed to protect a weak tooth from breaking, or to restore a broken or damaged tooth. Typically crowns are placed after a root canal to help seal out any infection and prevent the tooth from further breaking. Crowns provide strength, prevent further damage, and fit over the teeth.
Crowns can change the size, shape, and color of a tooth giving patients a beautiful natural-looking smile.
During a crown procedure, a local anesthetic is used to keep our patients comfortable and relaxed. The tooth is filed down to provide the perfect fit for the crown. Impressions are then taken and sent off to a lab where the crown is custom made, and temporary crowns are used until the permanent crown is ready.
Typically crowns take two appointments where the patient must return to have the permanent crown installed. Our office also offers same-day crowns for our patients, so they can receive their crown in just one appointment.
Once the permanent crown is ready we will install the crown using a special cement to affix the crown to the tooth. On average, crowns last anywhere between 5 to 15 years. We do recommend to avoid teeth grinding, or clenching your teeth to prevent damage to your crown.
