Why Do I Have Sensitive Teeth?

Do you drink coffee or eat ice cream that causes your toothache? Do you notice that brushing your teeth creates the same effect? You may have sensitive teeth.

This common phenomenon is also called dentin hypersensitivity. It usually takes place when you drink cold or hot drinks or eat especially acidic or sweet foods. It can also occur when brushing teeth or flossing.

Our Cypress dental office has written this article in order to help provide some causes for sensitive teeth and offer some treatments that you could pursue to alleviate this condition.

In this video, Dr. Lori Logan discusses the signs & symptoms of periodontal disease (which can include sensitivity in your teeth). For more info about gum disease treatments, please call our Cypress dentist today!

What is Sensitive Teeth?

Sensitive teeth, also known as dentin hypersensitivity, is the phenomenon of sensitive teeth caused by the progressive exposure of the second layer of the tooth called dentin. Dentin is a soft part of the tooth that is normally covered and protected by enamel and gingiva. Remember that a tooth consists of 4 different tissues, namely enamel, dentin, pulp, and cementum.

What Causes Sensitive Teeth?

As we have seen, the phenomenon of sensitive teeth is caused by elements that expose the dentine, either by eroding the enamel or by damaging the gums that can no longer cover it.

Various elements are known to use the enamel or to damage the gums. Here are the main ones.

  • Poor dental hygiene
  • Inadequate brushing technique
  • Toothbrush too hard, abrasive toothpaste
  • Bruxism, involuntary grinding of teeth during sleep

How Can I Protect My Enamel & Gums?

Good regular dental hygiene protects the health of teeth and gums. In addition to bacteria that can cause cavities and gum inflammation, the acidic foods we eat can lead to tooth enamel degradation. It is, therefore, important to clean your mouth at least twice a day, using the toothbrush and dental floss.

Daily dental hygiene must also respect certain points. Gentle brushing that does not put too much pressure on the tooth is preferred. Indeed, it is now known that high pressure on the teeth during brushing causes the narrowing of the gums. The gums are then no longer able to adequately protect the tooth, exposing the dentin to the root of the tooth.

Also, it is recommended to brush with a soft toothbrush to avoid damaging the enamel and to avoid abrasive kinds of toothpaste. They also use the enamel, which can no longer protect the dentine.

Finally, bruxism can also damage teeth to the point of causing the phenomenon of sensitive teeth and toothache. Grinding your teeth, or tightening them hard during sleep or during the day, uses teeth prematurely, including enamel covering.

But the pains caused by this condition are unfortunately not limited only to teeth. They are also manifested in the jaws, strongly solicited, and even in the ears.

It is particularly important to maintain the health of your teeth. By adopting good oral hygiene measures, modifying the brushing technique and using the right products, it is possible to avoid or reduce the deterioration of the teeth.

In this post, you’ll get an easy guideline about how to avoid common dental health problems:

The most primary oral health problem is toothache which occurs because of poor oral health hygiene. In order to avoid toothache, you have to swirl your mouth with warm water twice a day. There is a thumb rule of brushing your teeth after every meal but if you are not able to do it, then at least brush your teeth twice a day such as in the morning and before going to bed. It will help you to avoid unwanted toothache. With brushing, you also have to start to floss your teeth regularly to avoid plaque buildup.

Stained Teeth

Another common dental health issue is stained teeth that shake your sparkling smile and confidence too. In order to maintain your pearly white teeth, you need to find the right approach to avoid these stains. Several sugary, as well as dark foods and beverages, are the main cause of stained teeth. There are certain medications which lead stained teeth. Tobacco is one of the major reasons for stained teeth. It’s difficult to protect your pearly white teeth but not impossible. You have to avoid this by using whitening toothpaste and whitening mouthwashes with good oral hygiene routines.

Cavities is another dental health problem which will occur due to poor oral health routine. Your get cavities when a sticky bacterium, known as plaque builds up on your teeth both front as well as back, and slowly start to destroy the hard-outer shell, known as enamel. Not only kids but the adults can also have issues with tooth decay around the edges and at the gum lines. To avoid cavities, you need to brush your teeth with fluoride toothpaste twice a day, rinse your mouth with fluoride mouthwash and floss daily.

There are several other dental health problems which only happens due to poor oral health care, such as, inflamed and red gums, bad breath, dry mouth, sensitivity in teeth, and so on. With developing good oral health routine, you need to visit your dentist twice a year. It will help you to fix and avoid your oral as well as dental health issues.
