Teeth Straightening Without Traditional Braces

Invisalign CypressStraight teeth mean more than a beautiful smile … dental health is improved as areas where plaque is likely to build are eliminated. Patients of all ages can realize the many benefits achieved with Invisalign teeth straightening.

Advantages with Invisalign

Aesthetics – The aligners are clear. You can undergo the teeth straightening process without the telltale traditional metal brackets on your teeth.

Comfort – The aligners are made to fit comfortably over your teeth. They are strong enough to shift your teeth to the proper occlusion, but since there is no metal you won’t suffer from cuts and abrasions to soft oral tissues. There are no wires to break resulting in the need to visit the dentist for repair.

Convenience – Visits to your dentist to have wires adjusted to keep teeth moving is a thing of the past. With Invisalign, you replace aligners yourself every two weeks. You will require periodic visits to check progress.

Removable – Invisalign aligners are removable. This is a major improvement over traditional braces as this allows the patient to eat all their favorite foods; brush and floss daily without obstruction; and have teeth thoroughly cleaned every six months by their dentist throughout orthodontic treatment. Remove aligners for meals, snacks, and teeth cleaning throughout the day, and replace when done.

Requirements During Invisalign Treatment

To achieve desired results in the designated timeframe, it is important to wear the aligners a minimum of twenty to twenty-two hours every day. Failure to wear aligners as recommended can set your teeth straightening program back significantly.

Once teeth straightening has been achieved, the patient is provided with a retainer with instructions on when and how long it should be worn. This is an important step in completing the teeth straightening process. The retainer looks much like the aligners worn during treatment; it is designed to hold teeth in place while the teeth and bones that have been shifted are allowed to retain a memory of their new location. If the retainer is abandoned too soon or not worn as directed, teeth can drift back to their former malocclusion.

When considering teeth straightening, you owe it to yourself to compare Invisalign clear aligners to traditional metal braces. A consultation with our dentist, Dr. Lori Logan, will demonstrate how you can enjoy all the advantages of Invisalign clear aligners with the final result being a beautiful smile and a healthier mouth.

Is Invisalign a treatment alternative for malocclusions?

Invisalign Cypress TXInvisalign is a convenient and comfortable option for correcting a patient’s smile, and in certain cases, the system can be appropriate to address malocclusions (misaligned jaws), as well as crooked or otherwise incorrectly positioned teeth.

While the earliest iterations of Invisalign were limited to rather straightforward cases, the system has been improved since the years it was introduced. Now, even patients with rather complex cases can benefit from this treatment option. Your first step to see if it will work for you is to be evaluated by your dentist.

If you are eligible for treatment with Invisalign, your dentist will examine your teeth and jaws to collect information needed for the treatment plan. This may involve taking x-rays or dental impressions, and that data will be used to design the clear plastic trays that will reposition your teeth and jaws in the same way that conventional orthodontic appliances do.

Patients who choose Invisalign appreciate the convenience in comparison to traditional orthodontic treatment. The trays can be removed at mealtime, so there’s no need to restrict your diet (other than limiting sugar, which is just a good general practice for your oral health). You can also take out the trays when it’s time to brush and floss, so you won’t have to navigate around brackets and wires with your dental floss or tooth brush.

In return for that convenience, patients must be conscientious about wearing the trays as directed in order for the treatment plan to work. You will need to wear the trays about 22 hours each day and switch to a new tray according to the schedule given to you.

In more complex situations, jaw surgery may be needed to eliminate a malocclusion to achieve the patient’s smile goals. You may still be able to use Invisalign to straighten the teeth, however, and your dentist will collaborate with an oral surgeon on your overall treatment plan.

If you need to address a malocclusion, Invisalign may be a treatment option for you. Make arrangements to visit the office of Dr. Lori Logan for a consultation.

How Long Before I Start to See Results with Invisalign?

Invisalign CypressInvisalign clear aligners are replaced every couple of weeks to keep teeth shifting to their correct position. Changes are slow and subtle by design so some patients may not see results right away.

The Invisalign teeth straightening process can be employed to correct unwanted gaps between teeth, an over bite, under bite, cross bite, or overcrowding. The more severe the malocclusion, the longer treatment will take to correct it.

Invisalign offers many benefits over traditional teeth straightening methods:

  1. Aligners are clear – Their transparency allows the patient to have their smile makeover done with the confidence that their treatment is virtually undetectable.
  2. Aligners are removable – The benefits of this one aspect are numerous:
  • Unrestricted diet – aligners are removed to eat meals and snacks which means that all the healthy fruits and vegetables that may be off limits with metal braces are approved.
  • Daily teeth maintenance – brushing and flossing are completed with minimal effort allowing the wearer to brush and floss without any obstacles.
  • Twice yearly dental visits – Appointments with the dentist for a thorough cleaning and exam will promote healthy teeth and gums.
  • Tracking progress is easier when braces are removed.
  1. There are no wires or metal to rub against soft mouth tissues creating cuts and abrasions.

Invisalign has been improved to be able to treat almost all dental malocclusions. During your consultation with your dentist, photographs, x-rays, and impressions are taken. These tools will be used for diagnostic purposes; once treatment is approved the Invisalign laboratory will use them to fabricate a series of aligners designed to be updated every couple of weeks.

Each aligner was developed with the use of 3-D digital technology to keep teeth shifting. The aligners are to be worn a minimum of 20 to 22 hours every day to complete treatment in the designated time frame.

As treatment continues, the changes will become more apparent. In addition to the obvious corrections to your smile, straight teeth will improve your dental health. Crooked teeth provide areas for bacteria to grow because reaching them with dental floss and a tooth brush may be difficult resulting in them being overlooked. This can lead to dental decay or gum disease.

Invisalign clear aligners will provide a smile makeover with subtle changes that will result in improving your appearance as well as your dental health.
