05 Apr Enjoy a Healthier Smile with These Teeth Cleaning Tips
Keeping your teeth as clean as possible will go a long way toward maintaining a healthy, beautiful smile. Here are a few teeth cleaning tips that can help you stay on track.
- Have your teeth cleaned by a professional dental hygienist at least every six months. You should be seeing your dentist no less often than twice each year. In addition to the important exams that take place at these appointments, the hygienist will also provide a thorough teeth cleaning to remove any lingering plaque or tartar accumulation in the parts of your smile that you may not be able to reach easily with a toothbrush on your own. If you put off these professional cleanings, you may be more susceptible to oral diseases like decay and gum disease.
- Semiannual teeth cleaning alone is not enough to keep your smile as healthy as possible. You must also brush your teeth twice each day for two minutes each time, along with flossing daily, to keep your smile in good shape between visits to the dentist.
- Be sure that you’re using proper technique in your home oral hygiene routine. You can brush and floss according to a recommended schedule, but if you’re using poor technique, your smile isn’t benefitting as much as it could. In some cases – as with overly aggressive brushing – you may actually be harming your teeth. Check in with your dentist to see if you are brushing properly to disrupt plaque and tartar accumulation as much as possible.
- Use tools that are in good condition to clean your teeth. A worn, fraying toothbrush isn’t going to be very effective at clearing away plaque. Pay attention to the condition of your toothbrush, and take care to switch it out every 3-4 months. Make sure that the bristles aren’t too hard either, as that can also damage your teeth.
