20 Feb Can dental crowns improve the appearance of natural teeth?
Natural teeth that are unsightly due to large areas of decay or other aesthetic problems can be enhanced through dental crowns, which are tooth-shaped caps that slide over the biological teeth to restore their appearance.
In the past, getting a dental crown would have taken a couple of weeks and required multiple trips to the dentist. Same day crowns have revolutionized that process, though, giving patients an option to improve their smiles in a matter of hours!
These restorations, also known as Cerec crowns (for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics), are planned and created right in the office. The dentist will examine your teeth and use specialized computer software to design the crown, which is then crafted from a ceramic block using an in-office milling unit. The materials can be tailored to blend in with your biological teeth. No one needs to know you got a crown to make a tooth look better!
While you are waiting for the crown to be ready, your tooth can be prepped for crown placement. Once complete, the crown is then bonded on top of the tooth using dental cement.
These crowns are quite strong after being bonded to the tooth, but you do need to take good care of them (and the rest of your teeth) in order to get the maximum benefit. Continue with your usual oral hygiene routine – or give it a boost if you’re not so conscientious about your brushing and flossing. Be sure to get routine exams and professional cleanings, as well.
You may want to make some adjustments to your diet as you get used to the crown, but patients can usually continue to eat most foods with their crowns after they’ve adjusted. Use common sense, though, as anything that could damage a tooth may also harm your crown.
Want to improve your smile with a minimal turnaround? Explore Cerec crowns as a possible treatment solution in your case. We’d be happy to schedule an evaluation to decide if this treatment will help you achieve your smile goals.
