20 Oct Can I just wear Invisalign at night?
Invisalign is considered the future of orthodontics because it offers patients a convenient and comfortable way to straighten a crooked smile with a series of clear plastic trays that can be removed at mealtime and for the daily oral hygiene routine. Although the trays can be removed when necessary, they must be worn between 20 and 22 hours a day in order to move the teeth into the desired positions.
In order to achieve the desired treatment outcomes with Invisalign patients must closely follow their dentist’s instructions. If you wear the trays less than 20 hours, for example, only while asleep, you may not get the smile you are hoping to achieve.
Patients also must change the trays according to the schedule provided by your dentist. Most patients switch to a new Invisalign tray every other week or so. Although Invisalign doesn’t require brackets and wires like traditional orthodontics, it is based on the same principles as conventional orthodontic treatment, with specific forces applied to the teeth to reposition them. The tray-changing schedule is designed to facilitate this movement.
Even if you’re thinking you’d rather just wear the trays at night, within a few weeks you may find that Invisalign is so compatible with your lifestyle that it’s not even a nuisance to wear the trays all day. You won’t have to give up your favorite foods since you can remove the trays at mealtime. Just be sure to rinse your mouth thoroughly after eating to clear away any lingering food particles.
Aesthetic concerns also are less prominent with Invisalign than standard braces. Invisalign trays are barely detectable to the naked eye, so they will not detract from your smile’s appearance. In fact, you’ll be able to enjoy the results of your treatment in real time!
You may be tempted to try to scale back on the hours that you wear your Invisalign trays, but doing so can compromise your treatment outcomes. Ideally, the comfort and convenience of Invisalign will cause minimal, if any, disruption to your daily routine.
